Licensed Or Not?
Who has to have a License?
The State of Nebraska requires that anyone providing care for four or more children be licensed by the State of Nebraska.
Are Licensed Providers Better?
Not necessarily, in fact historically, there have been fewer reported problems with non licensed providers than with licensed providers. It's a personal decision that only you can make. To some, knowing that their provider is licensed is reassuring.
Pro's & Con's
There are those who prefer a smaller setting for their child. The non licensed provider is limited to only three children and may be the perfect fit for those looking for this kind of setting. Another thing to consider is that almost all non licensed providers operate out of their home. Many parents prefer that their child be in a home environment.
Others prefer that their child be around more children. Our children are just like us, some enjoy being around a large group, others prefer small groups. Only you know what your child prefers and what goals you have for your child. The best advice is to just pay attention to your child and decide on what you think will be the best fit for your particular situation.
Remember, do your homework, call references, be observant, ask questions. You must be comfortable with the person that will be your child's provider. A license does not guarantee better care for your child.
